Discipleship Course 1

D-Groups Discipleship Curriculum

For over thirty years, Adam Ayers (PhD) has been training Christian leaders in what have come to be fondly known as "D-Groups."

These long-term personal development programs have shaped generations of students through intensive, face to face discussions of key leadership topics, including Christian life and character, basic and advanced leadership, biblical hermenutics, pastoral counseling and social dynamics.

The D-Groups Project is currently producing a course-based curriculum that makes the D-Group learning experience available without having to attend live sessions with Dr. Ayers.

D-Group materials are now being made available in written booklets that walk students through the D-Group session dialogues, exercises and teachings.

Course One

the Disciple's Life:

a learning journey

The first of seven courses, Course One is "Ground Zero" for understanding who we are as human beings created in the image of God.

This introduction is designed for both believers and seekers. It uses complementary religious and scientific ideas to explore foundational Christian truths about: Life's purpose, the image of God, creational humanity, personal traits, integrity, ethics and morality, human lostness, the person of Jesus, the cross, resurrection, redemption and mission.

The course is organized in short learning steps that build on each other while allowing students to enjoy completion in stages.  Each of its 8 booklets is self-contained and includes its own learning helps, reviews, outlines and devotional applications.

The booklets are written in simple language and filled with illustrations, diagrams and explanations of key terms. Step by step instructions in every section walk learners through thought-provoking discoveries about core Christian concepts.

Individuals and Groups

One of the key changes in the new D-Group curriculum is that it's now easily used by individuals or groups.

Each workbook has complete instructions that allow leaders of all experience and training levels to work through course materials in-depth on their own before leading group sessions.

Lessons also have scalable activities that can be done either during group meetings or assigned to students as "homework." Tips give added academic resources where needed, while special concepts and terms get extra treatment in sidebar discussions that minimize the need for outside research.

Devotional, reflection and "Take-Away" sections help participants integrate what they've learned in everyday life, with an emphasis on growing in faith, practice and service.

Your own Space and Time

Cohorts and Individuals can now set their own pace for learning.

Course One is designed to take 4-6 months on a once-weekly schedule, but the sectional layout of the course enables you to take your time and go as deeply as you like. Follow tips, answer questions, review, explore sidebar discussions and related avenues of research, all at the pace that fits you and your group's particular learning style.

Although each lesson is complete, the lessons are not exhaustive. There's plenty of "wiggle-room" for leaders to customize the learning experience in speed and depth. Add your own insights, exercises or materials to tailor-fit the course to your own context and mission.

The D-Group program is engineered to build cumulatively, moving from simple topics to complex ones. However, each course is also designed to stand alone. As more courses are added, students will be able to work through a single course or the entire program, or even mix and match to create a specific learning journey.
